Writing for the mind, from the heart

For all lovers of poetry

Analysis of “I love you.”

One day, I decided to reach out to someone on social media and say hi. This urge just came over me, I felt like I wanted to text them. Overtime, we started to talk more and more. We bonded and became friends quite quickly. Overtime, they started to become an important part of my life. They make me really happy and I really love that I got to talk to them.

I love writing poetry about the small things that happen to me. The little bursts of emotion, be it anger, sadness, joy, peace, or anything in between. So I decided to write this poem, about someone who I talked to just by chance.

Throughout this poem, I use metaphors of the things that I love to describe how this person became someone I cherish. They became dark chocolate, or a pencil that writes perfectly. They became one of the little things that make me smile throughout my day. There is also repetition within each verse and amongst the four verses. I decided to make all the verses the same to help the poem flow more. I like the style I wrote this poem in a lot, as it is short and concise, but also meaningful.

I think the word choice and the lower case letters definitely add to the softness of the poem. I chose to use simple words in this poem. The simplicity of the poem makes it gentle, and sweet. I sometimes think that adding really exuberant words makes the poem brittle. I normally do that when I’m writing more negative poems. However, this is supposed to be a happy and light poem. The lowercase letters also add to the gentleness this poem is supposed to have. In a way, the lowercase letters almost submerge the ending of a line and the beginning of the forthcoming one.

Now, I love editing my poetry as well. It’s definitely a process and sometimes it takes more time than actually writing the poem. When starting off, I like to think of two main things to focus on, one with either the general structure or general meaning/subject, and one specific literary device. For this poem, it came to me pretty easily. For a literary device, I would look at my rhyme scheme. Rhyme can add more character to the poem, as it makes the lines more connected, and it can be more pleasing to the readers, especially if they read it aloud. For my general aspect, I would look at the overall subject and think about bigger things in my life. Doing this would change the overall meaning of the poem. It would imply that not only does this person make me happy, but they are also a big part of my life.

Overall, I really love this poem, definitely a favorite amongst the ones I have! Stay tuned for more poetry, poetry analyses, and also writing tips coming out soon.
